Medical Transcriptionist Earnings

The median annual wage for medical transcriptionists was $34,750 in May 2014. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $22,220, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $49,290.

Median annual wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of medical transcriptionists in 2014 were the following:


Medical and diagnostic laboratories: $38,340
Hospitals; state, local, and private: 36,480
Management of companies and enterprises: 35,460
Offices of physicians: 34,890
Administrative and support services: 30,340

Some medical transcriptionists may be paid based on the volume of transcription they produce. Others are paid an hourly rate or an annual salary.
